Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari (4 out of 5)
I love Aziz from Parks & Rec.
I loved this book. Thought it was going to be more humor, and it’s more statistics and observations on how social media and the explosion of it has contributed to a whole new mindset on dating, courting, and cheating on your significant others. Some will not like this book, because they’re stone cold busted. Others will read this and go “Ahh..it makes sense”. Still others will ignore it because they refuse to admit that the culture of social media as it currently is helps fester an environment fraught with blind dates that are arranged on Smartphones, sexting on Iphones, and infidelity because it’s convenient. Consider yourself enlightened.
Aziz, I didn’t know you had it in you, you magnificent bastard, but I’m so glad you shared this with us. Aziz wrote this book with a renowned sociologist, and there are traces of his typical humor (especially when he discusses his Indian stalkers, and when he touches on the culture of dating in other countries, most laughingly with Tokyo, I almost busted a gut reading that side-chapter. Presented with many pie charts that tantalize (pie charts. Pie. MMMM) and boggle the statistical mind, it’s hard to ignore what the two years of research yielded. I hope a great many people will read this and keep some of the points in mind. He makes a strong case for the old school way of romance. We can’t go back once we’ve come this far, but you can jump into the pool of current day modern love with some humor and with some facts. I only gave it 4 because the selfish side of me expected more humor. Otherwise, gold. Read it to be entertained and enlightened.
