Poisoned Pages: A Booktown Mystery by Lorna Barrett (4 out of 5)

The latest book in Lorna Barrett’s Booktown series finds town “jinx” and owner of the “Haven’t Got A Clue” mystery bookstore, Tricia, in another pickle. She is finally back in her remodeled (after a fire) home and has a small gathering to celebrate. And it is…until the date of one of her guests drops dead from anaphylactic shock after eating an appetizer. The guest, Frannie, works for Angelica, Tricia’s sister, and is none too pleased about her online date’s demise. Angelica is usually Tricia’s rock, but even she is distracted by her personal problems, and not much comfort to her sis. Tricia decides-in the midst of the murder investigation-to run for the Chamber of the town, when Angelica retires. Her two opponents are Chauncey, someone who despises her since his ex bit the dust and he put all of the blame at Tricia’s feet, and Russ, her stalkerish ex with his own family, and a rag-tag newspaper that he runs and uses to run Tricia’s rep into the ground. So between that, Tricia’s shop and friends being vandalized in Stoneham, and the murder investigation, Tricia has more on her plate than she can eat. The latest installment wraps up in a satisfactory, non-contrived manner and I’m looking forward to the next installment in the series.
